This solo exhibition is made up of 12 elements—ideas, proposed solutions and attempts—accumulated through brainstorming with myself between 1999 and 2009.
A total solar eclipse occured across Europe and the Middle East in August 8, 1999, which I had witnessed on television. At the time, I was aware that an eclipse will occur 10 years from then, in 2009, which will be visible from an island in the southernmost part of Japan, a place which wasn't well-known. Since that day, I began to think about a proposition to send a person, naive about both art and spectacular phenomena like the eclipse, to this Japanese island, to witness this occurence without being given prior information; and to embody this work without taking any documentation.
It was a big challenge for me, and in the end, I wasn't able to reach the goal; my solution had failed. Despite this, I decided to place the elements I had collected in those 10 years in an exhibition, and present this obsession with a long time scale. As one of the elements, I gave myself the role of myself, greeting the audience through a live-streaming projection.
Medium: Offset printing (poster)
Dimensions: 728×1939mm (B1)
I took this photo at the time when the sun reappeared after a total eclipse. Unfortunately, we weren't able to observe it because of a storm. The earth and the clouds had hidden the sun. However, it should be a phenomenon; irrespective of whether we can see it or not.
L–1: August 11, 1999 at Kitakyushu
A total eclipse of the sun occurred in Europe in 1999. I was watching images of the phenomenon through the eyes of several cameras and observers, transmitted to me via television. I took these images through the eye of my own camera. Then I began the project for 2009.
L–2: November 2, 2002 at Akuseki Island
I went to Akuseki Island to do research for this project.
L–3: July 22, 2009 at Akuseki Island
The images I'd witnessed in 1999 must have been taken by these kinds of cameras. I took photographs of these cameras, which would witness this take his phenomenon and transmit the images all over the world. Everyone there was the object in these cameras.
